by Deric Lewis,
We’ve all had days, and periods where life isn’t going the way we would like or wish. Sometimes, life can feel like it’s spinning out of control, and we are helpless. Sometimes it feels like there is no hope in sight. We all have troubles, hardships, and difficulties. Perhaps you’re having monetary difficulties, or your relationship is toxic and falling apart, or you failed to achieve a goal you’ve set. The set backs common to life can leave you feeling helpless and defeated, a failure or worthless. Winston Churchill once said: “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loosing enthusiasm.” sometimes we simply need to be reminded why, even though you may be feeling a bit like a failure, you are most definitely not.
Here are 10 signs that life is far from over even though you may feel like giving up.
1. You’ve lived and learned
Life isn’t easy by any means, for anyone. While the bumps on the road, and unexpected setbacks may wound our pride, the ride is definitely worth it. Life is more about the journey, than the destination. Look back to your failures and defeats. You need to understand they were all for a reason and part of a larger picture. Had you not lost that job, would the next opportunity have become available? If you hadn’t spent years in that toxic relationship, would you have been able to recognize how to build a healthy one? Each hardship has led you to where you are at today. Each trial has molded you into the magnificent, resilient, beautiful person that you are. Without the difficult parts, it’s hard, if not impossible, to truly appreciate the calmer waters in our lives. Continue to move forward in good faith, hope and love, knowing that each experience has helped to shape you into the beautiful person you are today.
2. You have a comfy bed to sleep in, and other luxuries.
Many people in the world are so poor that they lack even the most basic comforts. Many do not have electricity, clean running water, or more than a dirt floor with a pile of straw to sleep on. Yet these people keep living. In fact, many of the poorest people you could ever meet, are richer in joy than those with a lot of materialistic possessions. If they can keep their heads up, you can to. While I understand many of these things simply depend on where you were born, if you have access to something as simple as a comfy bed to lay in at night, be thankful for the blessing of having a luxury many don’t, and the opportunity to expand upon it that many around the world are denied.
3. You never stop trying to improve yourself
Feeling a bit down because you haven’t achieved what you want to achieve within a certain time frame shows you are trying and putting forth a daily effort to be a better you. It means you haven’t given in and allowed life to break you. It’s not feeling sad, or down that should worry you, it’s apathy. The fight isn’t over until you stop caring. If you feel disappointed in yourself when you fail, it means life still matters to you. In the grand scheme of things, you always strive to be better and for as long as you continue to do that, happiness, success and love will come in their own time – just don’t give up. The only true failure is refusing to get back up when you’ve been knocked down. Albert Einstein once said: “It’s not that I am so smart, it’s that I stay with problems longer.” Hang in there and continue to persevere. Eventually the solution to your problem will appear. Never stop striving to be all you can be!
4. Knowledge is at your fingertips
In this day and age, with the internet available to the majority of people, you can learn anything and everything you have ever wanted to. Knowledge is at your beck and call with just the click of a button! Since knowledge is power, take a advantage of it. Use the resources available to you. Knowledge is a priceless tool in the pursuit of your dreams. The more you know, the further you can go. Take advantage of all the “learning” opportunities that come your way.
5. You have food to eat
Many of us are unaware of how lucky we really are to get a full stomach on a daily basis. Food is often overlooked and taken for granted. Access to abundant food is such an overlooked blessing, yet if you miss it for a few hours you start feeling just how important it is. Take the time to enjoy your next meal, whatever that is, really taste each bite, and remind yourself that you are one of the lucky ones. Make an effort to be aware of things you take for granted. Take pleasure and find happiness in the small things.
6. You have the power to choose
Life is all about choices. Aristotle once said: “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives – choice, not chance, determines your destiny.” whether we succeed in life, or fail is ultimately up to you. Our lives are not predetermined. It is up to you to make the choice of whether or not to let your problems define you. We have a choice in the way we react to hardship. Claim your power to choose.
7. You’ve experienced love at least once.
“It is better to have love and lost, than to have never loved at all.” You are beyond blessed to have experienced love in some form or another! Whether it’s platonic, familial, or romantic, love is an experience you will never forget, and will have an impact on you for the rest of your life.
8. You have clean water
There are people who have to question daily where they will obtain safe drinking water, it is their harsh reality. Around 783 million people do not have access to clean water around the globe. Be thankful and fully aware that you are doing well in life, and have what you need even if you don’t think so. Learn to differentiate between needs, and unfulfilled wants.
9. You have a dream
Dreams can give us purpose. They can motivate us to do remarkable things. Dreams can provide the drive necessary to make our lives, and the lives of others more rich and fulfilling. Whatever your dream is, it’s yours, own it. You have the ability to embrace it and create it. All you need is the willingness to act. Don’t give up on dreaming or on your dreams. They are what life’s best things are made up of.
10. Your happiness is real
Happiness is a choice. You have the power to choose happiness for your life in everything you do and in every circumstance. Even in the bad things that happen, there is always a silver lining we can embrace. It’s your choice to let troubles define you, or to embrace the fact that they often lead to better things. Buddha, in the four noble truths, taught that suffering is a result of desire. The desire or wish for circumstances to be different. This type of thinking is self defeating. Embrace the moment and facilitate your awareness of it. it’s as simple as breathing. Your happiness is defined by whether or not you are able to discern and seize an opportunity to feel happy. It may be simple as being in the company of a loved one, or witnessing a beautiful sunset, or hearing the laughter of a child. If you can find beauty in the breakdown, you’ve won half the battle of feeling happy amidst your troubles.
11. You’ve never lost sight of your purpose
For all the times life has caught you unaware and thrown you a curve ball, you’ve never lost sight of your dreams and ambitions. You’ve refused to be beaten. You’ve had the ability to step back and realize that you have a purpose, and a reason to keep living. You’ve refused to dwell on the problems in your life, and instead have consciously chosen to focus on the solutions.
