Many people are aware that one of the best vinegars is apple cider vinegar. But, the trick is to find a raw, unfiltered and organic vinegar, which can be hard because manufacturers use various techniques to increase quantity to the detriment of quality.
Fortunately, there is a way to make your own apple cider vinegar at home, and the procedure is very inexpensive. All you need is some time for the apples to ferment and you are done.
There are two methods to produce a homemade organic apple cider vinegar and both have been described below. One uses apple scraps, while the other uses whole apples. Choose any of these two and enjoy a healthy vinegar.
#1 Apple Cider Vinegar Made from Scraps
To make an apple cider vinegar from scraps you need to save the peels and the cores. This method is most suitable for people that like to eat apples every day, so instead of throwing out the scraps, they can save them to make some vinegar. It even takes less time than the second method.
What you need is:
– a large bowl or a jar with a wide mouth
– apple scraps (preferably organic)
– a cheesecloth (to protect the vinegar from debris and flies)
Just leave the scraps to air in order to turn brown. After they have turned brown just put them in the bowl or jar and fill it with water all the way to the top. You can put as many scraps as you want. You can even continue putting scraps days later.
Cover the bowl or jar with the cheesecloth and leave it in a dark and warm place, for example, a cupboard. After a few days the contents will start to thicken and weird materials will form on the top. This means that you have to stop adding scraps.
Leave it to ferment for an entire month, and then you can start tasting it in order to see if it’s strong enough. When it becomes strong enough, strain the contents and bottle the liquid.
Don’t be afraid if the vinegar is a bit muddy, it’s just sediment from the scraps. It’s nothing to be afraid of. If you don’t like the sediments, filter the vinegar once more with a paper filter.
#2 Apple Cider Vinegar from Whole Apples
If you go with this method you will need about 7 months for the apples to ferment.
What you need is:
– 10 apples (organically grown)
– a bowl
– a cheesecloth
This method is practically the same only that it involves more work and more time. Cut the apples into quarters. You don’t have to peel them. Let them turn brown like in the first method and then put them in a bowl filled with water. Cover the bowl and put it away for 6 months in a dark and warm place.
After 6 months have passed you will notice the same things as described in the method above. Strain the liquid and leave it in another bowl covered with cheesecloth for another 4 to 6 weeks. Voila, now you know how to make an apple cider vinegar.
