15 Natural Ways To Whiten Your Teeth

Bright and shining teeth can make you look healthy and youthful. However, our teeth might turn yellow for several reasons, such as heredity, age, inadequate dental hygiene, excessive tobacco use and beverages such as coffee and tea. Other causes of tooth discoloration include injury, antibiotics, improper metabolism, climatic changes, and infection. A few remedies to get rid of yellow teeth are:

1. Baking Soda: This is one of the best ingredients for teeth whitening. You can prepare a teeth-whitening mouthwash by mixing baking soda in water and rinsing twice to thrice daily. This corrects minor yellow stains. You can even scrub teeth gently with the mixture for sparkling teeth. However, use in moderation to preserve your natural enamel.

2. Strawberries: These are rich in vitamin C, which whitens teeth. Make a strawberry paste and gently apply it on your teeth twice daily. The yellow appearance will vanish. You can even mix strawberry pulp in baking soda and spread the mixture on your teeth. After a few minutes, rinse and brush with toothpaste to eliminate any residue.

3. Lemon: Lemon is a great bleaching agent, which can eradicate yellow teeth. Gargle with lemon juice or scrub your teeth with lemon and add some salt. Apply the mix on stained teeth and rub the paste on your gums. Rinse with normal water. Follow the routine twice daily to eliminate yellowing and tartar.

4. Apples: This crunchy fruit scrubs your teeth like a toothbrush, whitening them in the process. Eating two apples a day can make your teeth look whiter. Chew well to allow the acidic juice and fibrous flesh to work on the yellow stains. Broccoli, cucumbers and carrots are effective, too.

5. Holy Basil: Dentists recommends these leaves for prevention of pyorrhea and other gum diseases. Make a powder out of sun-dried holy basil leaves and brush with it. You may even paste them with mustard oil for teeth cleaning.

6. Margosa: Chewing Margosa branches tackles dental problems and makes the yellowness disappear. Mix Margosa oil in your toothpaste to eradicate cavities and bad breath. It works because the oil contains antiseptic and astringent properties.

7. Salt: It is one of the basic dental cleaning agents used down the ages for replenishing teeth’s lost minerals and allowing them to regain their whiteness. Common salt can be used as a tooth powder or can be mixed with charcoal. You can even mix it with baking soda and rub it on your teeth to eliminate that yellow tinge. However, salt can damage the enamel and gums if used roughly.

8. Orange Peel: Use fresh orange peel regularly to reduce the yellow accumulation on your teeth. Do it each night before bedtime. The calcium and vitamin C combat the oral microorganisms. Within a few weeks, you can ensure shinier, whiter and healthier teeth.

9. Hydrogen Peroxide: This chemical has a mild bleaching effect. Gargling with a peroxide-based mouthwash reduces staining. You may even make a paste and brush your teeth gently with it.

You may also talk with an emergency dentist to figure out how you can achieve that pearly white smile easily and safely.

10. Coconut Oil: This ancient Ayurvedic treatment is used for a variety of health reasons, and also benefits your oral health. Oil pulling both whitens your teeth and helps you to maintain pink and healthy gums. It’s an easy addition to any morning routine.

Beyond the benefits of whiter teeth, oil pulling is also great for overall detoxing and body cleansing. I oil pull every morning by swishing 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in my mouth for 15 minutes. After spitting (never swallow the oil) I rinse out my mouth and follow with brushing my teeth. Unlike the baking soda, oil pulling can be done daily, in fact, I highly recommend it!

11. Activated Charcoal: Activated charcoal works through adsorption (not to be confused with absorption) and acts by electrostatically binding molecules to the surfaces of the charcoal particle. So in other words, it removes toxins by acting like a magnet when they ‘adhere’ to the surface of charcoal. And the best part is that it doesn’t affect the enamel!

Want to know how to use activated charcoal? I found a fab recipe right here which goes a little something like this…
•Brush or clean your teeth as normal.
•Mix together 1/2 tsp activated charcoal powder with 1 tablespoon water
•Swish it around in your mouth for 15-30 seconds.
•Hold it in front of your front teeth for 3-5 minutes.
•Rinse your mouth – very well (in fact, you will need to keep rinsing until it comes off completely. I give my teeth a quick brush afterwards with water and also use a tongue scraper as it WILL make your tongue look like it’s about to fall off).

12. Banana Peel: To whiten teeth with banana peel, you need to first brush your teeth as usual with a normal toothpaste. Your best bet is using a toothpaste that does NOT contain fluoride! Then, take a piece of inside of banana peel (it is necessary to use ripe banana which has the most potassium content) to rub gently around your teeth for about 2 minutes.

13. Turmeric: Chew a small piece of raw turmeric root, preferably organic. Chew it up well using as many teeth as possible. Turmeric powder can also be used but it is less effective than fresh root. Mix the powder with water to form a paste and brush with it. Finish with a regular tooth brushing. Afterwards your toothbrush will be temporarily yellow, but your teeth will be glowing white.

14. Olive Oil:  Some people are attesting to their teeth becoming whiter by applying olive oil to their teeth after they brush.  There are two ways you can apply it. Add a few drops to your tooth brush and simple brush it on, or add the olive oil to a corner of a clean wash cloth and rub it on. It can’t hurt to try this natural whitening tip. Olive oil is good for you!

15. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): It makes sense that apple cider vinegar would eventually remove stubborn stains on the teeth, especially from coffee and nicotine. It has been proven that it does work but you have to be consistent and it takes a least a month of continuous usage to see results. Some say that using ACV looks like you just got your teeth professionally cleansed.  Be careful, as with all acids, it can remove the enamel on your teeth as well. After brushing with ACV, you will need to brush again with regular toothpaste, preferably a non fluoride paste, or rinse your mouth out really well.

Some Natural Whiteners Can Eradicate Enamel

Some teeth whiteners are just not a good idea to use, especially lemon juice.  The acid in the lemon juice does great for bleaching clothes, hair, and getting stains out of furniture, but you wouldn’t want to put lemon juice on your teeth every single day. Eventually the acid creates tiny holes in your teeth and then every kind of staining type food will seep into these tiny holes and remain there. The acid from the lemons is so strong it just eventually wears away the teeth causing cavities.
